Working Towards a Fairer and Better Economy for All
2024

In recent years, the Better Way Alliance (BWA) has emerged as a growing force in advocating for both employers and employees. Established in 2017, BWA unites business owners, nonprofits, and community groups committed to fostering decent work practices and sustainable economic development.

BWA has taken a leading role in addressing the escalating commercial rent crisis affecting small businesses across Canada. In their report Out of Control, BWA highlighted how unaffordable commercial rents are forcing many small businesses to close their doors, garnering significant media attention from outlets such as CBC, Global News, and The Globe and Mail.

BWA’s advocacy has also influenced policy development at the municipal level. The City of Toronto’s latest economic development plan embraces BWA’s vision for sustainable local businesses and good jobs for all, and includes measures to address rising commercial rents, support for employers offering quality jobs, and recognition that worker well-being drives business success.

In October, BWA brought over 60 business leaders, community advocates, and policy experts together to discuss challenges affecting Toronto’s local economy and share potential solutions at the first Toronto Community Wealth Building Summit. From commercial rent solutions to community land trusts to innovative funding models like community bonds and employee ownership trusts, attendees heard about a range of initiatives that are building a more equitable and sustainable local economy.

As businesses and communities navigate the interconnected challenges of economic inequality, rising costs, and a rapidly changing workforce landscape, BWA’s work is more critical than ever. By prioritizing worker well-being and community-centered business practices, BWA is not only addressing immediate concerns but also laying the foundation for long-term economic resilience. We are proud to support BWA’s efforts in building a fairer and better economy for all.
