Metcalf Foundation News
Spring 2024

One of my favourite places in Toronto is High Park. It is the heart of my neighbourhood — a gathering place, a meeting spot, a place to run, bike, walk, and play. Every spring, residents across the city rediscover the magic of the park when the Sakura trees blossom. The park is green and lush, filled with vitality and people.

This year, the cherry blossoms had some extra meaning for me. First, it was not that long ago that the city banned people from coming to the park for the annual blooms. At the height of the pandemic, gathering around the trees was deemed a public health hazard. It has been wonderful to reconnect with friends, neighbours, and fellow Torontonians around something as simple as a walk in the park (and take photos like the above). Second, this spring marks a new beginning for me and the Metcalf Foundation. As the new CEO, I hope to put my own stamp of leadership on the work we do, building on the incredible legacy left by my predecessor, Sandy Houston.

My early days here have taught me that our team is exceptional, our partners are committed, and our mission is more important than ever. Across all our areas of work, we see opportunities to make an impact locally and nationally. It is inspiring to work at an organization dedicated to helping our country build a just, healthy, and creative society.

So this spring, and going forward, I hope you will continue to help us grow and blossom into a foundation that lives up to that lofty mission. I look forward to working with you.

The Metcalf Foundation office is located on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Today, the meeting place of "Tkaronto" (Toronto) continues to be home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to work together on this land.
