Metcalf Foundation News
Fall 2024

I’ve been reflecting on how much of our public discourse lately has focused on “tearing it down.” Many people, justifiably, are upset and want to upend a status quo that often feels distant, uninterested, or even hostile.

And while that response can be cathartic, we must ultimately turn to what we want to build. This is what we’re focused on here at Metcalf, and in this newsletter, we give a sense of just that — what we’re trying to build through the work we support, alongside our phenomenal and committed team.

We are honoured and proud to be among the initial philanthropic funders to join a historic agreement to fund Indigenous-led conservation initiatives in the Northwest Territories. Grounded in Indigenous leadership, this unprecedented collaboration between Indigenous governments, the Government of Canada, the Government of Northwest Territories, and private donors aims to protect approximately 38 million hectares over the next decade, while delivering profoundly positive economic and social impacts to the region.

A story emblematic of how we make space for new ideas is that of Dave Harvey and Park People. Metcalf served as the initial funder to allow Dave to think about how a group might animate parks and public spaces. The result was a paper … that turned into a proposal … that garnered funding … that created an organization … that has had a lasting impact in our community. We’re always eager to support outstanding ideas bolstered by top-notch leaders — willing to take the risks necessary to help get an idea off the ground, especially when the payoff is broad and deep.

Lastly, you will read about the most recent addition to our team, Kavone Manning. Kavone joined us as our Program Associate in September and has added to our capacity across the organization. At the end of the day, Metcalf is only as strong as the team that works here. Kavone brings energy, intelligence, curiosity, and outstanding communication and relationship skills to the team. We’re delighted to have her on board, and to see her grow in her role and the new ideas she’ll bring to our work.

In reading this newsletter, we hope you get a real sense of who we are, what we fund, and the partners we seek. I look forward to continuing this work in 2025 and I urge you to join us on our mission to keep building.

The Metcalf Foundation office is located on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Today, the meeting place of "Tkaronto" (Toronto) continues to be home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to work together on this land.
