City of Toronto Seeking Ideas for $50 Million Smart City Competition
2018

As part of the federal Smart Cities Challenge, the City of Toronto wants to hear the new and ambitious ideas of community organizations and individuals about how data and technology can be utilized to create to make a meaningful impact to life in Toronto. The potential of all aspects of city living, everything from transportation, to the environment, economy, communities, engagement and social services as it intersects with data and technology, is on the table.  The winning municipality will be awarded a $50 million prize.

Please share your ideas by completing a short online survey or through a hardcopy form available at a local Toronto Public Library branch. The deadline is February 2, 2018. Participants are also being encouraged to use the #smartcityTO hashtag.

On Wednesday January 17 from 5:30-6:30 p.m., the Toronto Public Library will host a smart cities panel discussion with the City’s Chief Transformation Officer, Chief Information Officer, General Manager, Transportation Services and the City Librarian. Held at the Toronto Reference Library, the event is open to the public.

The federal Smart Cities Challenge is sponsored by Infrastructure Canada. It is a pan-Canadian competition open to communities of all sizes, including municipalities, regional governments and Indigenous communities (First Nations, Métis and Inuit). The Challenge encourages communities to adopt a smart cities approach to improve the lives of their residents through innovation, data and connected technology.
