Sandy Houston, President and CEO
Sandy Houston

Sandy Houston is the President and CEO of the Metcalf Foundation.  Over the last ten years, Sandy has led the development of Metcalf into a leading private foundation engaged in helping Canadians imagine and build a just, healthy, and creative society.  Prior to joining Metcalf, Sandy worked as a litigator at Osler’s, before becoming a founding partner in Stitt Feld Handy Houston, Canada’s first law firm to focus predominately on alternative dispute resolution.

Much of his current work is focused on creating opportunities for innovation and collaboration and in advancing new thinking and policy approaches.  Sandy has been instrumental in the establishment of a number of Canadian not-for-profits.  He was the founding chair of the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, an arms-length, public foundation created by the Government of Ontario to support the environmental and agricultural integrity of province’s new Greenbelt.  He is also a member of the board of the Tides Canada Foundation, Philanthropic Foundations Canada, and serves as advisor to a number of charitable organizations, including Mowat Centre for Policy Innovation, Imagine Canada, the Ontario Not-for-Profit Network, the Literary Review of Canada, and The Walrus.

Colette Murphy, Inclusive Local Economies Program Director
Colette Murphy

With over 20 years working in the civil society sector, Colette has worked on a wide range of issues including in the areas of immigration and settlement, community development, and equity and diversity.   Prior to joining the Foundation, she held leadership positions at United Way Toronto.  Through her professional affiliations, Colette has served in an advisory capacity on numerous initiatives, most recently as a member of the Ontario Government’s Social Assistance Review Advisory Council.  She is currently a board member with the Wellesley Institute and is active in her community with her two children, Celeste and Malachy.

Michael Jones, Arts Program Director
Michael Jones

A seasoned arts administrator with over 20 years’ professional experience, Michael joined the Metcalf Foundation in 2007 after serving as General Manager at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre (2001 through 2007) and Arraymusic (1998 through 2001).  He has also held senior administrative posts with Choirs Ontario and the Muki Baum Association.  With a graduate degree in music from the University of Western Ontario, Michael continues to be a practicing artist, working primarily as a director and music director in theatre.  His credits include work with Acting Up Stage, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Drayton Entertainment, The Red Barn Theatre, Theatre Scarborough, and Victoria Playhouse Petrolia.

Mary MacDonald, Environment Program Director
Mary MacDonald

Mary MacDonald has nearly 20 years’ experience initiating and implementing sustainability and environmental policies and programs in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and North America.  Prior to joining Metcalf, she was Senior Advisor and Environment Lead in the Office of Mayor David Miller at the City of Toronto.  She has held positions at the Stockholm Environment Institute, the United Nations, the World Bank, the Earth Council, the City of Toronto Environment Office, and with an international engineering firm.  She has a background in energy and environment studies.  Mary also serves as an advisor to the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group.

Janet Lewis, CA, Director of Finance
Janet Lewis, CA

Janet Lewis holds BSc and Msc degrees in applied mathematics as well as the professional designation of chartered accountant in both Canada and the United Kingdom.  She has worked as an auditor at KPMG and in two managerial positions (banking and financial planning) at Sherritt in addition to serving as Treasurer for Via Rail, Director of Finance for The United Church of Canada, and Vice President of Finance & CFO for Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters.

Heather Dunford, Grants Manager
Heather Dunford

Heather Dunford joined the Metcalf Foundation in 2008 after spending nine years with The School of Toronto Dance Theatre as Student Services Coordinator and three years with the Toronto Children’s Chorus as Box Office Coordinator/Development Assistant.  Heather holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Waterloo and completed the reputable Arts Administration Specialization with co-op placements at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, The School for Performing and Visual Arts at The Centre in the Square, and the Living Arts Centre Mississauga.

Stephanie Sernoskie, Office Manager and Executive Assistant
Stephanie Sernoskie

Stephanie Sernoskie joined the Metcalf Foundation in 2012 as Officer Manager and Executive Assistant to the President and CEO. Stephanie's diverse professional experience most recently included her position as the Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer of a mining company since early 2010. Prior to her time there, she earned her Honours BA in English and anthropology from the University of Toronto and worked in a newspaper library. She participated in the Katimavik program during a gap year, where she lived and volunteered in three Canadian communities. Stephanie enjoys many activities in her spare time including running and tweeting (usually not at the same time), and she has recently begun exploring the world of computer programming and website design.
