In January 2004, Toronto Artscape was selected by the City as the preferred proponent for the redevelopment of the former TTC streetcar repair barns south of St. Clair Avenue West at Christie Street. Artscape’s vision for the reuse of the barns was developed through an extensive process of community consultations. The Artscape Wychwood Barns is a community-driven project which demonstrates that people and organizations can accomplish much richer and more sustainable goals by working together than they can on their own. The project began as a collaboration between Artcape and The Stop Community Food Centre, supported by a lead donation from the Metcalf Foundation. The initial gift from Metcalf triggered support from all levels of government, and the Barns opened in 2008.
Each of the Metcalf Foundation funding programs has different eligibility criteria, application processes, and deadlines – some of our programs request a letter of interest prior to a full application, other programs welcome full applications.
Nonetheless, we recommend that all organizations interested in applying for funding follow the process outlined below. By following this process, you will be in the best position to determine whether the Metcalf Foundation is a good match for your program and how to present the strongest case for funding.
Step 1: Eligibility & Research
- Please review the How We Work section of this website. It provides a strong introduction to our funding programs, our strategies of working, and the ways in which we hope to learn from funded projects.
- Review the FAQ’s section of the website – both the general questions and the specific questions for each funding area – in order to confirm your eligibility to apply.
- In order to investigate the types of projects that we have funded recently, search our grants database.
Step 2: Select a Program Area
Before beginning work on your application, download and read the appropriate program guidelines. The guidelines provide detailed information about the eligibility criteria, application processes, and deadlines for each program. After reviewing the guidelines carefully, if you have additional questions, feel free to contact the appropriate Program Director.
Select the funding program which seems most appropriate to your needs.
